Why Complementary Therapy?

Complementary therapy is a treatment or technique such as Swedish Massage used to supplement traditional medical treatments and promote healing and aid in relaxation and general well-being.  Each of the treatments we provide at The Recovery Well, has its distinct benefits.

Reflexology is known to exist since the time of the Egyptians as a painting found on the wall of a Pharaoh medic’s tomb depicts people practising reflexology. There are several theories as to why reflexology is effective, the one we believe, is that all cells have energy within which travel through the body in channels. If these channels block for any reason it can create an imbalance in the body and that is where poor health develops.

By pressing the reflex points in the feet that correspond to the channels running through the body, it dislodges the blockage and allows the body to re-balance and promote homeostasis (optimal automatic working of the body) and self-healing.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is a therapeutic massage delivered by pressure applied to the skin in a variety of ways. Through effleurage (stroking or sweeping), squeezing, kneading, lifting and tapotement (percussion type hitting in a way that doesn’t hurt!), the blood flow to the area is stimulated, encouraging the removal of toxins and promoting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

It is also very relaxing for the mind and body. Deeper massage including acupressure and work on trigger points is applied to tense muscles and problem areas in some massage treatments to remove the tension and discomfort as much as possible. Please ask us for more information regarding which treatments include this and could suit your needs.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils derived from one or more parts of plants, usually by steam distillation, for therapeutic purposes. Essential oils have been used in fragrances, flavourings, and medicines for thousands of years and there are around 400 different oils extracted from plants all over the world. Each oil has its own special therapeutic properties and can be used or applied in a variety of ways, including massage, reflexology, in a bath, in products used during and after washing such as body lotion and shower gel, inhalation: using a cold steam diffuser, inhalers etc., compresses.

The aromatherapy massage tends to be much more of a soothing massage involving techniques that will be even more detoxing and promote the removal of lymph through the lymph nodes. The blends used are all bespoke to each individual client. We do not use premixed blends in our treatments unless made by us for specific treatments such as facial reflexology where a safe facial serum is created and used in-house (excluding clients that may not be able to have the oils for a particular health reason, instead we would use a simple organic oil such as Grapeseed).
